tuxedo cat in front of wood fireplace

Tuesday November 22, 2022 Pic of the Day.

We've been through a few days of cold, windy and snowy weather where I live near Lake Erie in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, and it is the kind of weather best sheltered out by a wood fire. I don't have one anymore, but I did enjoy my time living in a log cabin with my cats with the woodstove. This really takes me back. Cornelius appreciated the good things in life. Today's quote below seems to me to have be written with Cornelius in mind.

Today's Quote: "Thou art the Great Cat, the avenger of the Gods, and the judge of words, and the president of the sovereign chiefs and the governor of the holy Circle; thou art indeed...the Great Cat." - Inscription on the Royal Tombs at Thebes

brown tabby kitten in wooodpile

Saturday November 19, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I've mentioned in a couple of pictures this month that in November of 2008 I took in a mom cat and her five kittens after the barn they lived in burned down leaving them all without a home. Here is one of the kittens I later named Chessie after the mascot for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1933. When I was young in the 1960's, the "Chessie Cat" was still known by everyone as it had become a very successful advertising campaign by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.

Today's Quote: "I love cats. I even think we have one at home." - Edward L Burlingame

Picture Taken: November 2008.

tuxedo cat in manitoba maple tree

Thursday November 17, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I was taking Dexter for a walk, when he just basically walked up the Manitoba Maple. Dexter is an amazing athlete.

Today's Quote:

“Ode to the cat” by Pablo Neruda

The animals were imperfect,
long-tailed,
unfortunate in their heads.
Little by little they
put themselves together,
making themselves a landscape,
acquiring spots, grace, flight.
The cat,
only the cat
appeared complete and proud:
he was born completely finished,
walking alone and knowing what he wanted.
Man wants to be fish or fowl,
the snake would like to have wings
the dog is a disoriented lion,
the engineer would like to be a poet,
the fly studies to be a swift,
the poet tries to imitate the fly,
but the cat
only wants to be a cat
and any cat is a cat
from his whiskers to his tail,
from his hopeful vision of a rat
to the real thing,
from the night to his golden eyes.

tuxedo cat out for walk, tuxedo cat in cat pen

Wednesday November 16, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I had Andi out for a walk, and Dexter was quite upset in the pen. He is meowing in protest in the picture - and did not stop meowing until it was his turn to go for a walk.

cart set up for cats by woodpile

Tuesday November 15, 2022 Pic of the Day.

In November 0f 2008, a neighbours barn burned down killing 8 horses, and leaving a mother barn cat and her 5 kittens homeless. Nobody was too concerned about the cats, and after another neighbour called me and told me the story, I went and got the mom cat, and she went and got all her kittens and brought them back to my place. I made an outdoor house for them all in an old steel wagon/cart that I lined with old, clean wool blankets and covered with a garbage bag, folded up pen and a log to hold it all in place. I was not able to catch the kittens - they kept running into the woodpile gaps - so I made the cart up for them until I was able to catch everyone a few days later. You can barely see the kitten I later named Leon in the corner of the woodpile behind the cart right under the tarp - he is an orange tabby, so you really have to look, be he is watching me take this picture. This was a very remote area that my log cabin was in, so it was dangerous for cats. The dark woods you see in the picture was literally hundreds of square miles of dark woods, marsh land and untold numbers of lakes. This was in an area south-east of Algonquin Provincial park in Ontario, Canada. Of the mom cat and the 5 kittens, I still have 3. The mom cat (her name was Mumma-Puma), the kitten Leon in the picture, and his sister Chessie have passed away, but I still have Daisy, Elly-May and Andi. You can see Elly-May this month in yesterday's picture, and Andi in the picture from Friday, November 11. They are 14 years old now, and having health issues, but still going. To go from being barn cats in a remote, wooded area to being long term coddled house cats is quite the transition, but they have managed.

Today's Quote: "Some animals are secretive; some are shy. A cat is private." - Leonard Michaels

Picture Taken: November 2008.

forest cat

Monday November 14, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Elly-May out for a walk on the leash. I like the way she is carrying her tail. Elly-May is a very sweet cat, but this picture makes her look more intense than she is.

Today's Quote: "A cat's behavior is a direct reflection of his feelings." - Carole Wilbourn

Picture Taken: November 2022.

forest cat

Sunday November 13, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I was taking Norton for a walk. Notice the grey in his coat matches the colour of the soil (lower left), and the beige in his coat matches the dead hosta plants.

Today's Quote: "Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a wornout coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another." - Irving Townsend

Picture Taken: November 2022.

tuxedo cat

Saturday November 12, 2022 Pic of the Day.

tuxedo cat on blankets

Tuesday November 08, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I only took 2 pictures in November of 2004 because I had sold my house and was in the process of moving. At the end, just before the house closing, all I had left in the house other than a bit of food, was some blankets and my radio and a tin with personal stuff. This is the last night I stayed there with Cornelius, and I took this picture.

Tuxedo cat in sun in tunnel

Sunday November 06, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Avensby enjoying the sun in the cat tunnel that connects the house to the cat pen. I like the way the decorative grasses reflect off the window making it look like Avensby is covered in whiskers.

5 kittens

Wednesday November 02, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Yesterday I mentioned that in November 2008 I took in a mom cat with her 5 kittens. The kittens were about 6 weeks old when I got them & their mom. Here is a picture of all five of the kittens when they were about 5 months old. From left to right: Elly-May, Andi, Daisy, Leon & Chessie. Picture taken by P. Walsh.

Picture Taken: February 2009.

calico cat

Tuesday November 01, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Welcome to November. November reminds me of November 2008 when I took in a mom cat with her 5 kittens when the barn they lived in burned down. It took a while to catch the mom and the kittens. This is a picture of when I first saw Mumma-Puma, which is what I named her after I took her in.
