Wow, September tomorrow. How summer slips by. I looked back one year to see what was going on. Here is Fiona resting her chin on my arm while I'm on my zero gravity chair. Fiona likes to do this. She looks a little disturbed because I was fiddling around with the phone camera with one hand to get a picture.

Margarita on the left, Andi on the right. Margarita is one of my smallest cats, whereas Andi is large for a female cat. Andi is about 16 pounds, Margarita is about 7 pounds. This picture shows the size difference quite well. Margarita is about 10 years old here, Andi is 14 in a month. By the way, Andi is not fat. I asked the vet about her weight and the vet felt around Andi and said she has almost no fat and her body is all muscle.

This picture always makes me laugh. Norton looks so bored and Mumma-Puma is just relaxed and enjoying herself behind Norton. In the sunroom on a spectacular early August day in 2018.

I don't know how I've missed this picture of Leon before, but I just ran across it looking for another picture from the same time in May of 2018.

Dexter wearing my neck pillow. Dexter is pretty good about putting up with my antics. He knows I won't hurt him, and I think he enjoys the attention.

I mentioned on the August 19 picture that Leon was amazingly good at getting along with other cats. I looked around and found this picture (one of many) where Avensby is snuggled up with Leon. Here she is using Leon as a pillow. Picture taken through a window.

Cornelius passed away on August 16, 2011. A painful day for me, and honestly, it still is hard to think about. Such a good friend & teacher. This picture was taken shortly after I got my new digital camera in 2003. I think he looks fantastic with the colours of the comforter & blanket.

Today's Quote: “When the cat you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.” – Unknown

Monday August 15, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Happy Cornelius Day 20th anniversary! August 15, 2002, Cornelius was found deep in the country, almost dead. Taking him in changed my life. This picture of him is when he was still sick from lung problems, and is under a red heat lamp which I discovered helped his breathing if the temperature in the room was turned down. He was so happy to be taken care of, and you can tell by the way he is looking at me while I took this picture.

Today's Quote: “Cornelius: King of all that is" - my quote when I saw Cornelius surveying everything around him calmly & confidently any time he was taken to a new place

Picture Taken: 2003.

Cornelius on the beach at Aylen lake. I've shown a few pictures this month of Cornelius at Aylen lake. This time of year I think of Cornelius a lot, and the time at Aylen lake was his favourite. He loved the beach, the docks at the marina and the cabin we stayed in with a chair by a window in the sun he could sleep in.

Today's Quote: “The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior.” ― Hippolyte Taine

Cornelius waiting for me so we can walk to the beach. The wood structure is a little deck to hang clothes on the clothes line. I was hanging clothes and Cornelius followed me, got up on the rail, and just waited until I was done. After I took this picture, we walked to the beach and spent the morning there.

Thursday August 11, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Another Cornelius picture from October of 2006. This was a happy time for Cornelius because he seemed to just love being around water and boats. It looks like he is waiting to go for a boat ride in this picture. He was a found cat in the middle of farm country with no water other than a pond nearby, so it came as a shock to me that he loved being around water.

Today's Quote: “For, though the room was silent, the silence of half a hundred cats is a peculiar thing, like fifty individual silences all piled one on top of another." - Susanna Clarke (1959)

Picture Taken: October 2006.

Wednesday August 10, 2022 Pic of the Day.

August is the traditional best time of year for being in the lake district of Ontario Canada. It's been a few years since I've been there, but I always think about it in August. This is a picture of Cornelius on the docks at the marina at Aylen Lake beside Algonquin Park. Cornelius loved spending time on the docks watching fish and boats. This picture was taken when we were there in October, so it was quiet compared to what it would have been if it was August.

Today's Quote: “Cats can work out mathematically the exact place to sit that will cause most inconvenience.” Pam Brown

Picture Taken: October 2006.

forest cat

Tuesday August 09, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Another picture of Norton taken at the same time as yesterday's picture. The cats are really enjoying the pen which makes it worth all the work, time & money I put into it.

Today's Quote: “Like all pure creatures, cats are practical.” – William S. Burroughs

Picture Taken: August 2022.

Monday August 08, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Norton in the same spot Avensby was in yesterday's picture. Norton is looking into the "Lion's Gate Portal" which is appropriate as Norton looks like a tiny Lion to me and August the 8th is called the "Lion’s Gate Portal". It is when the sun is in Leo and the star Sirius, Orion's Belt and the Earth line up. It is an annual event. Actually, Norton is watching a bird in the tree.

Today's Quote: "Social media is like ancient Egypt: writing things on walls and worshiping cats." — George Takei

Sunday August 07, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Avensby on one of the steps or shelves inside the cat pen I just made for the cats. They really do enjoy it. It is under a big, beautiful tree which is cool on the hot days we are having, plus they get a breeze and still can see 360 degrees.

Today's Quote: “Rousseau pounced. Men who dislike cats were tyrannical: "They do not like cats because the cat is free and will never consent to become a slave.” ― Robert Zaretsky, The Philosophers' Quarrel: Rousseau, Hume, and the Limits of Human Understanding.

Saturday August 06, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I was thinking of Cornelius when I got up this morning. A picture of him in 2003. That's 19 years ago of course, and I find that a bit shocking as I clearly remember taking the pictures of Cornelius that day of which this is one. It feels like it was about 5 years ago to me.

Today's Quote: “Guilt isn't in cat vocabulary. They never suffer remorse for eating too much, sleeping too long or hogging the warmest cushion in the house. They welcome every pleasurable moment as it unravels and savour it to the full until a butterfly or falling leaf diverts their attention. They don't waste energy counting the number of calories they've consumed or the hours they've frittered away sunbathing. Cats don't beat themselves up about not working hard enough. They don't get up and go, they sit down and stay. For them, lethargy is an art form. From their vantage points on top of fences and window ledges, they see the treadmills of human obligations for what they are - a meaningless waste of nap time.” ― Helen Brown, Cleo: How an Uppity Cat Helped Heal a Family

Picture Taken: January 2003.

Friday August 05, 2022 Pic of the Day.

Margarita is a different cat. The original grumpy cat for sure. She likes me, but she is a glass-half-empty personality, and it shows. I can't criticise her - she was a feral cat, and it was clear she had a rough time before I got her at about 2 years old. She is on my lap here.

Today's Quote: “A cat's rage is beautiful, burning with pure cat flame, all its hair standing up and crackling blue sparks, eyes blazing and sputtering.” ― William S. Burroughs, The Cat Inside

Picture Taken: July 2019.

Thursday August 04, 2022 Pic of the Day.

If you look down to the Tuesday, August 02 picture, you can see the covered cat bridge to the pen I just made. Here is a picture close up of one section of the tunnel with Avensby in it. The cats really like the covered bridge. It does have nice views on both sides, and feels snug and safe to the cats.

Today's Quote: “There are several cats smoothly moving about, which helped me greatly to relax, for I have always felt that no house is wholly bad where there are cats, and conversely, where there are several cats, a house is bound to be wonderfully charming.” ― Hans Holzer, The Ghost Hunter: Chilling Tales of Real Life Hauntings

Picture Taken: July 2022.

Tuesday August 02, 2022 Pic of the Day.

I've been working on an outdoor cat pen for a month and a half so far. Still have to shingle the roof and more, but it is open to the cats, and so far it is a big hit. They can come and go as they please through the covered bridge. You have to look carefully, but there are 3 cats in the pen in this picture. Andi, the tuxedo is obvious, but Elly-May is looking at me taking the picture through the leaves, and Patty, the silver cat is lying down just behind Andi.

Today's Quote: “I have lived with several Zen masters -- all of them cats.” ― Eckhart Tolle

August always make me think of Cornelius. Here he is enjoying time on the docks at the marina on Aylen Lake, Canada.
