Tuesday November 30, 2021 Pic of the Day.
As I say over and over, Margarita is my most unusual cat. Sometimes, when she is sleeping, her upper eyelids are partially open. When that happens, you can see her nictitating membrane, commonly known as the "Haw" or "inner eyelid", but properly called the palpebra tertia. This gives her a zombie look. I've tried so many times to get a better picture of this, but as soon as I get out my phone camera or other camera, her inner eyelid retracts, and she is watching me. This is about the best picture I have of her doing this, but certainly not the best example I've seen. Another interesting thing (well, to me anyway) about Margarita's eyes, is that she is the only cat I've had where most of the time you see the whites of her eyes like a human. See the Sunday November 28 picture to see what I mean. And, of all my cats, Margarita's eyes are by far the most reptialian looking. I often call her "Crocadilly Margie". She doesn't seem to mind.

Fiona was sitting looking out the window, but when I got the camera ready and snapped the picture, she was coming over to see what I was up to.

I've mentioned that Margarita is an unusual cat in many ways. She actually has a warm personality, but her eyes really do look like reptile eyes with a cold, detached look in them when she looks at me. She has always remained "wild", but over time we have become very close. I'm obviously a real cat person, but I struggle to describe Margarita, though I'm so glad she is part of the family. Another thing about Margarita is the way she moves. She moves in bursts, and trots when she moves. She rarely runs or walks. When she goes by and I just catch her in the corner of my eye, it is like a weasel or ferret going by. She was a feral cat until she was about two years old.

I found Andi this morning after looking around. She loves to get under this sherpa fleece throw I use to cover my legs when I'm in the chair. I wonder if she thinks she is hidden?

Both of these cats are gone now, and I still think about them a lot. Mumma-Puma on the left, and Leon the orange tabby. Mother and son cats. Mumma-Puma would have been 14, and Leon was one month away from 10 years old when this picture was taken.

Avensby seems to be thinking something over on her coffee break. I like the way she is holding her hands.

These two have very similar markings, but Elly-May is quite large for a female cat (around 16 pounds), whereas Fiona is quite tiny at around less than half of that.

Wow, does Margarita ever look good against the background of this yellow fleece blanket.

I like this picture of Dexter. Even the background looks great with the colours and texture.

Avensby has legs that seem long for her body size. It is quite noticeable when she is walking, and sometimes, like in this picture, when she is resting. This picture also captures Avensby's intense, serious personality.

This is a picture taken at the same time as yesterday's picture. This was a picture gone wrong with Andi yawning, but look closely at Andi's whiskers. The combination of the light, Andi moving, and the camera conspired to make Andi's whiskers look like ribbons of light.

I just took this picture yesterday of these two sisters from the same litter. They are 13 years old, still together, and still get along like close sisters. Andi (tuxedo) and Elly-May.

Another day, another Avensby picture. On her back on a blanket. I've mentioned a few times on this site how Avensby has really nice, oversized whiskers that cascade down like a waterfall - except if she is really playing, then they tend to go straighter like the picture below. Even though she is upside down, her whiskers hold their form.

Avensby pretending to be a swamp monster. Avensby loves to tunnel around under blankets. After doing it for a while, she will come to the edge and rest. I had nothing to do with this other than taking the picture. I didn't even arrange the fringe.

Just took this picture yesterday morning. Andi (tuxedo) and Patty on a chair in the basement with my snowflake blanket on it. The cats LOVE this spot as you can tell.

Tomorrow, this picture will be 13 years old. Taking Cornelius for a walk and going by one of the cords of wood. This picture was taken exactly 2 weeks before I took in the mom cat and her 5 kittens mentioned in the previous 3 days. If you look to the November 01 picture, you will see that Cornelius is in almost exactly the same spot the tuxedo kitten Andi was in 2 weeks later. When I took this picture of Cornelius, I had no idea this was foreshadowing that 2 weeks later I would have 6 more cats.

Yesterday was a picture of 2 kittens and their mom cat. The day before was Andi kitten from the same litter. This picture above was taken almost 11 later, shows Elly-May (close) that was in yesterday's picture (furthest from camera on our left) and in the background is Andi who was in the November 1 picture.

A follow-up picture from yesterday. Mumma-Puma and two kittens - Daisy & Elly-May in the yard at the edge of the woods. That is a very deep, dark woods with bears, fishers, wolves, bobcats, and even pumas - a neighbour said he saw one in my yard, though that subject was very contentious in the area I lived, however it has been confirmed after I moved away - in fact, the area I lived in is now considered the center of the Ontario puma range. I wanted to get the cats inside as fast as I could, but the cats were wild, and it was not going to be for a few more stressful days. This picture is of terrible quality because it was taken at a distance through a lexan window and mesh screen.

November always reminds me of the time I was living in a log cabin in the woods of Central Ontario, Canada and ended up with a mom cat and her 5 kittens because the barn they lived in burned down. You can just see the mom cat's tail at the bottom of the picture, and Andi, one of the kittens by the woodpile. At the end of last month, I showed a few pictures of Andi as an adult.
