Wednesday March 31, 2021 Pic of the Day.
Wow. It's the end of March already. Starting to feel like spring on some days where I live. Cats are getting out in the sunroom on the warmer days. Avensby and Norton here. Avensby is much smaller than Norton, so it's not just perspective in this picture. The colours in this picture do have a spring like feel.

This month, I've been showing pictures of the "sunroom gang" on the 27th, 24th, 23rd & 22nd. I wasn't planning on showing another, but was going to show a picture from one year ago - and I managed to do both. I found a picture of what's left of the sunroom gang. Leon, the orange tabby passed away in 2018, but the three remaining - Dexter (left), Avensby (behind) & Norton (right). This is about 2 years after the other sunroom gang pictures I showed this month, showing this social group is not a flash in the pan, but a real social group. Even though Avensby is a small cat, and the other 2 are bigger males, Avensby is so full of spirit, she is the defacto leader of the group. Avensby has an intense, serious & distinct personality. Norton is just a fun loving goofy cat, and Dexter is hard to describe - tough-guy on the outside, soft and loving on the inside. In the background, wishing she was part of the sunroom gang is Fiona looking on wistfully.

I really like the colours in this picture. Avensby looks good too. An odd shot with Norton on the left out of focus in the foreground looking statuesque.

When I was looking for pictures of the "sunroom gang" in yesterday's, March 22 & 23 pictures, I saw this one of Leon on my lap in the sunlight. It made me remember how beautiful Leon's colouring was. In the sun, he was a rich yellow-golden with orange. His whole family has rich, beautiful colouring. This picture was taken with a discount smartphone, but actually captures the colours properly.

For Monday & Tuesday's picture (22nd & 23rd) I showed pictures of what I called the "sunroom gang". Here is another picture of them more than a month later.

Sometimes after taking a picture, I can't believe how it turned out. I was on the floor taking pictures of another cat, when I heard a sound and looked up. There was Norton on the window shelf looking down at me, watching me take pictures. I turned the camera around at him and took a picture. This is what came out. The blue in the background is the sky through the window. I'm surprised by the colour, as it was long after the sun had gone down.

Another picture in the theme of the past 2 days. This picture was taken in the evening of the same day of yesterday's picture. Not sure where Leon is in this picture, but I'm sure close. Avensby is the closest, Norton next with his right arm on Avensby's shoulder, and Dexter on the far side.

Following on from yesterday's picture, here is the same group about a week earlier. I was in the sunroom, and these four had poured into the room through the cat door and had just jumped up on the table when I took this picture. The sunroom gang is back.

I decided to look back to March 2018 to see what was going on. I used to call these 4 the "sunroom gang". They used to all hang out together in the sunroom, and other places too, but it seemed the sunroom was their spot. This was new to me when this group formed. I had seen many times in the past 2 cats form a close bond, but this was the first time I had witnessed cats form a very close social group. None are siblings, and all came into the family at different times, so this was a friendship bond, not a family bond. I had a mom and 5 kittens taken in at the same time that were close, but this group were all introduced at different times. This group went on for a couple of years until Leon (orange tabby) died. When that happened, the rest of the group were still friends, but the group did not move around together after. Over the next couple of days, I'll see if I can find more pictures of them on different days. 3 are males, and one female, though Avensby, the female, is very much what we used to call a "Tomboy".

Dexter. Since last Tuesday, I've been posting pictures of cat's faces close up. I've been having fun doing this as I really enjoy looking at cat's faces. I don't see cats anymore, I see individuals, thoughts & feelings. Cats express their thoughts and emotions in their eyes so clearly. I'm not the only one to see this, and it reminds me of the Ernest Hemingway quote about cats: “A cat has absolute emotional honesty: human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.” Clearly, Ernest Hemingway spent a lot of time observing cats.

Avensby has a distinct, strong personality that comes through in this picture. Her eyes are quite expressive, and you can watch her eyes as she is thinking and see the shifting feelings. In Avensby's eyes, you can see Elly-May reflected - she is a white cat with a large orange spot on her side sitting on a teak table. You can see the one and only lamp that is on in her eyes too. Taken in low light at night.

Norton is so photogenic. Unfortunately, he is also very squirmy. 95% of the time he is either moving non-stop or passed out sleeping. Within 2 seconds of this picture he was on the other side of the room.

Happy Patty Cat Day! On March 17, 2010 I was called by a neighbour who said he saw a car pull over and set a cat in the ditch and drove off. I went and got the cat, and it was a 6 month old kitten. I remember when I first saw her, she was totally oblivious to what had happened, and was playing on my neighbour's lawn, having a great time. All I had to do was reach down and pick her up. Because it was March 17, I decided to call her Patty. I think she was just coming of age, and whoever had her didn't want to pay for the spaying. My guess is she was a Christmas present to someone who lost interest. I have been told Patty would have cost a bit of money as a kitten because she is either a Silver Abyssinian or a Tabby/Silver Abyssinian cross. Either way, I've been told her markings are perfect for a cat of this type. I'm not a breeds person, but I do think Patty is very beautiful, and can see why people would like a cat that looked like her. She is super cuddly, but she is also quite unbending in her personality, and does not get along well with most of the other cats, though she sticks to me like glue, and we are very close. She is 11 1/2 years old here.

I just took this picture last night after the sun was down. The light in this picture is just a lamp a short distance away. Elly-May is very hard to get good pictures of for many reasons, so when she was still I tried taking a few of her. I've wanted pictures of her that capture her beautiful colours. Finally, a picture that captures her colouring almost perfectly - at least on my computer monitor. I'm also very happy with the accidental colours of the background that compliment her colouring very well. Elly-May is 12 1/2 years old here.

Beware the Dexters of March! Taken on March 15, 2018. Dexter loves to leap up onto me and check things out while I walk around. He is a sharp cat, and sees the image in the smartphone of the picture I'm taking in the bathroom mirror of us.

There are long-hair cats, and then there is Daisy. In places, like her sides, her hair is over 4 inches (10 cm) long. She is a big cat too, especially for a female cat at about 17 pounds. I've been told she is a "Norwegian Forest cat", but even though I'm a cat person, I'm not well versed in cat breeds. That said, she does look like that type of cat when I search for them on the web. I just call her "the big fluffy". Taken through the front window while she is sunning herself in the morning sun. One more thing of note about her which is also true of her siblings, is that the white areas of her fur are pure white. The white areas on other cats I have is not pure white when compared to pure white paper for instance. But with Daisy, her white is as white or whiter than the whitest paper. You can see that when you compare her to the white paint in the picture and the white vertical blinds. All the members of her family (I had taken in her mom with 5 kittens and kept them all) have the brightest, richest, clearest tones of colour I've personally ever seen on cats. You can see one of her sisters Elly-May in the Friday, March 12 picture, and her brother Leon in the Tuesday, March 02 picture.

I'm quite fascinated by how the cats have taken to this plush toy fox. This is Elly-May with the toy fox - and if you look closely, you can see she is resting her head on the toy fox. I've seen this before. My cat Corneliuis took to a small teddy bear, and used it as a pillow and would carry it around. My cat Andi had a plush toy cow that she took too, and would use it as a pillow and keep it close to her. The March 09, March 05 & March 01 pictures below show Norton, Avensby and Fiona with the same plush toy fox.

I couldn't resist another picture of Xxaque (white) and Felemur (lynx point). This time in my back yard in the very late 1990's. Another scan of a film print.
Taken: late 1990's.
Wednesday March 10, 2021 Pic of the Day.
I could kick myself for not taking the 5 seconds to write the date on the back of this film photo print. My guess is the early to mid 1990's. Taken with my father's 1966 Asahi Pentax Spotmatic film camera. At that time, I was using Fuji 200 iso colour film. This is Felemur (Lynx Point Siamese) on the left, and Xxaque on the right. These two were the very closest of friends from 1989 when I found Felemur on the road to when Xxaque died in October of 2004. Felemur went into an intractable depression after Xxaque died until he finally passed away in 2009. I am so very glad I took the time to take pictures of this amazing friendship.

This plush toy fox I brought home has become something of an object of fascination for the cats. I've always had plush toys around, but this one has captured their attention. I'm going to guess it is something to do with the face and eyes. I know when I saw it in the clearance bin, I was taken by it.

These two don't look anything alike - except their faces. The coats on their bodies are completely different in colour and pattern. I was really surprised to see them both together in the basket.

Two days ago, I put the plush toy fox on the top of the bookshelf. Avensby saw this and leapt up there. I watched to see what would happen. Avensby went over to the toy fox, looked at it, sniffed it, then did this. It looks like she is trying to figure out what the toy fox is looking at.

I mentioned in the story about yesterday's picture that Fiona and Leon were very close. I looked through the pictures and found this one of Fiona and Leon together. This is very typical, and I have dozens of pictures that seem very similar from over a wide span of time. You can see why Fiona would have missed Leon when he passed away. I keep mentioning that Fiona is a tiny cat, and you can see that here. Leon was a normal sized male cat and was about 16 pounds, where in this picture Fiona was 6.5 pounds. Fiona was 6 years old in this picture. Leon was 8 years old here.

I had another picture for today, but last night I took this picture of Fiona with my new plush toy fox. All of my cats are feral or cats other people didn't want, and when I was leaving a local store the other day, this toy fox was in a small bin with other leftover Valentines Day candy and items that didn't sell. Noboby wanted this toy fox, so I thought it should join the family. When I saw the toy fox, I thought it had eyes that were huge for its size just like Fiona. I set it down on the blanket last night, and Fiona went over to it and did this. They look like a pair with their big eyes. Interesting thing is, Fiona used to have a very close cat friend - Leon, but Leon passed away 2 1/2 years ago, and Fiona missed him quite badly - still does actually. After Leon died, Fiona would just lie on something with her chin flat on the surface staring straight ahead. After looking at this picture, I see that the toy fox is resting on its chin looking straight forward. I wonder if Fiona read that as it being lonely.
