tuxedo cat

Sunday February 28, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I'm going to end this month on a strange note. First off, it almost makes my brain hurt to realize this picture is now 3 years old. To me, it feels like one year at the most. So, on to the story. In late February of 2018, Dexter started seeing something outside the window. At first, I assumed it was a cat, squirrel, bird, etc. However, whenever there was a critter outside, the other cats would see it too, and they would get up into the window shelf and watch. This was different. It was mainly in the evening between 6pm and 9pm, but sometimes outside that time, and Dexter was the only cat that could see it. He would not go up to the window shelf to watch, but always stayed on the floor. When I put him onto the shelf to watch, so I could see where he was looking and see if I could see what it was, Dexter immediately jumped down in fear, and went back to staring from the floor. This went on for a long time almost every evening. I looked, and looked, and looked every time, but I could see nothing. I put other cats onto the window shelf to see if they would spot something, but they would just casually look around and get bored and jump down. He always looked to the same spot. To me, it seemed he was looking at a spot about 10 feet (3 meters) outside the window and about 10 feet (3 meters) in the air in a space between trees. I have a few pictures of Dexter watching this spot, but here is one from when this first started.

2 cats on a blanket

Sunday February 21, 2021 Pic of the Day.

If you knew these two, this picture would make your jaw drop. Of all the cats I have, this pair - Patty (Silver) and Dexter (Tuxedo) - are the most antagonistic toward each other I have. They just don't like each other. Both are nice cats, but the personality clash here is too much for both of them. When Patty sees Dexter, she hisses at him, and will even go after him. When Dexter sees Patty, he stalks her, then attacks her. Neither one is innocent, neither one is the sole guilty party. So, when I saw this, I scrambled to get the camera out. Without a picture to prove this, even I would not have beleived my memory that this actually happened. Can miracles happen? Yes, this picture is proof. Notice how Patty is even using one of Dexter's feet as a pillow. Just to put anyone at easy who might think this is a sign the world is ending, less than 24 hours after this picture, they were back at getting on each other's nerves with Patty hissing and Dexter attacking.

new cat integrating into family

Saturday February 20, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Yesterday I showed a picture of Margarita being integrated into the family with an explanation of how I did it. Margarita was my most difficult integration of a new cat, whereas Norton was so easy it was weird. This picture is the first day of Norton (grey cat) being in the house, and his first outing from the pen which he was in for about 1 hour. I set him down after the other cats ate, and this happened. I stood there confused. I had never seen anything like this. He never had to go back into the pen. The fact that he just sat down and fell asleep beside 2 cats he had never met before, and no interest in exploring the house was confusing. How could he be sleepy and unrattled by being in a new house with unfamiliar cats? He was happy, and the vet said very healthy. The fact that the other cats didn't even bother getting up or sniffing him was confusing. The fact that Elly-May (white with orange & black) didn't freak out, was confusing as she is not the easy-going type at all. Leon didn't even turn around to sniff him. The whole event was confusing. I spent more time setting up the pen and taking it down than using it for Norton. To this day, I don't know what happened.

tuxedo cat in pen

Friday February 19, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I've been asked questions about how I integrate a new cat into the family. Though I stopped taking in any new cats due to my age 5 years ago, when I did, I had a developed a very successful method. It isn't for everyone, but here is a picture of Margarita being introduced slowly into the family. When I got a new cat, I would suspend the dog pen I had from the ceiling so that the bottom of the pen was about the height of my face. In the pen was a litter box, water and food. The new cat would stay in the pen with regular supervised outings JUST AFTER the other cats had eaten. Hungry cats are more likely to be grumpy, but full-tummy cats are likely to be more forgiving. While in the pen, the new cat is high above the other cats giving the new cat a sense of security (cats climb up for safety), and all the cats - new and current - get used to the smells of each other, and used to seeing the others with no chance of a fight suddenly breaking out. This picture is 4 days after Margarita was introduced to the family. She was one of the more difficult cats to integrate, and it took about 10 days before she was ready to let free in the house. I will show a picture of the quickest integration I've ever seen tomorrow.

Thursday February 18, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Sometime this year Dexter will be 13 years old. He looks pretty good for a cat of that age. This picture is odd for some reason though. It looks like him, but seems to capture the personality of another cat.

This is an amazing picture to me. These two - Avensby on the left, and Margarita on the right - just don't get along. Both very nice cats, but it's a case of personality clashes. Even if they were people, it would be like the odd couple. Avensby is bold, plays roughly and is assertive. Margarita is reserved, quiet and timid. I take it as a great compliment that they would be willing to be together like this just so they could be on my lap.

Happy Margarita Day! On February 14, 2014 I brought Margarita home. She was a very sad 2 year old cat when I got her. Feral, captured and in a cage. All that is long in the past, and now she knows she is loved. And love is what Margarita day is all about.

tuxedo cat face close up

Saturday February 13, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I don't understand why, but some pictures capture the character of the cat, whereas most do not. This one captures Andi's bright, aware personality easily. This picture was taken in July, and you can see how much light there is. It is humming with sunlight. From a February perspective, it sure looks nice. If the orange lamp shade was just a little to the left, Andi would have been wearing a fez.

Today is "Dexter Day". On February 11, 2012 I brought Dexter home. He was a 4 year old just-neutered Tomcat that nobody wanted. Most people who get a new cat don't want 4 year old Tomcats even if they have been recently neutered because they can be a bit of a handful. Dexter fulfilled that sterotype. This picture was taken February 12, 2012 as he was still being kept separate with supervised outings to make sure the integration with the other cats went as smoothly as is possible. This is after a long outing where explored the entire house, and overall was quite well behaved (not his normal state). Cozy picture with Mumma-Puma (calico) on the table with Dexter in the pen. She had 5 of her 3 year old kittens in the house, and kept an eye on Dexter to make sure he wasn't a threat. It was interesting to watch as she would follow him around, and get between him and any of her kittens if they got close. Over time, they got along well, and Dexter became very good friends with her only male kitten Leon. You can see Dexter and Leon hanging out together 6 years later in the February 03 picture of the day. Leon passed away in the summer of 2018, and Dexter missed him and looked for him for a long time after.

I've mentioned before that Avensby sits in interesting positions. Here is one from the other day. She is in her asperagus box with one of her arms stretched straight out. Her tail is out too. By the way, I know it is considered correct to call them her front legs instead of arms, but I have a habit of calling them arms when cats use them like arms, and front legs when they are using them like legs. If you think about it, cats have the option of using them as both.

When Elly-May gets up onto my lap, she will either jump down a second later, or stretch out and fall asleep like this. I cannot figure out the reason she jumps down so quickly sometimes, and stays others. She is not asleep yet in this picture, as she had just jumped up and was listening to see what I was up to (taking pictures of her).

buff cat and tuxedo cat

Saturday February 06, 2021 Pic of the Day.

This is Tucker (buff) and Lulu (tuxedo) enjoying a brief moment of February sunshine. This picture was sent to me by a friend. Last March, Tucker somehow got outside - he is an indoor cat. He got lost for 17 days. It's not known what happened to him, but there was evidence he had been in fights and was hurt. He is fine now after some vet care. So nice to hear a story where it ended up well.

Back in 1966 Bob Dylan did a song called "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat". As soon as I saw this picture of Margarita, I could hear that song in my mind. I don't think Margarita understands how you're supposed to wear a hat. When I saw the picture, I thought of the song. When I thought of the song, I remembered sitting on the floor of the house I lived in at that time listening to FM radio on the console Telefunken stereo. That was a while ago. Long before Margarita. I just realized as I was typing this, if you go to the home page, go down the page to the picture of me on the floor with my cat Sam in 1966, you can see part of the Telefunken console stereo in the upper right part of the picture with the front door of it open. Who knows, maybe Bob Dylan was playing on it.

Monday February 01, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I was looking back to February 2020, and found this picture of Elly-May on my lap. It has been cold and windy with lots of snow where I live for the past few days and I was thinking how perfect Elly-May's coat is for this weather. She is an indoor only cat of course, but she still will go out to the unheated sunroom by herself sometimes and just sit out in the cold watching the world go by. There is a cat door the cats can use to come and go from the sunroom. She is close to 11 1/2 years old in this picture.
