eight cats

Friday April 30, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Looking through my pictures gives me the sensation of the rapid passage of time. Here we have a total of eight cats in the summer of 2015.
Taken: August 2015.

mother and son cats

Thursday April 29, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Taken in the evening of the winter solstice of 2012. Leon (orange tabby) and his mom, Mumma-Puma, on my coffee table. Mumma-Puma was 8 years old here, and Leon was 4. They both passed away in 2018 - 4 months apart. They always got along, and were extraordinarily close. I knew Leon's dad in a passing way for a couple of years. He was feral, and would use an animal path through my yard almost daily. I could never get close (I lived in a woods at the time), but we got to know each other, and he would stop and watch me from a distance if I was outside. I would talk to him, and he would let me get about 20 feet away from him before he would bolt back into the woods. You can see Leon with 3 of his 4 sisters in the April 25 picture. In the April 15 picture, you can see 2 of Leon's sisters sitting about the same way as this picture. This was normal for the 6 members of this family - Mumma-Puma and her 5 kittens from her last litter.
Taken: December 2012.

two tuxedo cats

Wednesday April 28, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Not a cat, I know. This is Spike, a "Grey" squirrel we raised indoors. I don't know what happened to her mom, but I found her on my back deck as a very lost, scared tiny baby squirrel in the spring of 2001. She lived indoors for a couple of months, then slowly transitioned to the outside. She would come back and visit about 3 or 4 times a week for years until she disappeared. I'm feeding her hickory nuts from my hand when she was about 2 years old.
Taken: April 2003.

two tuxedo cats

Tuesday April 27, 2021 Pic of the Day.

After days of pictures from the past, we are now back to now. Took this picture two nights ago of Avensby under a blanket with Dexter in behind. Avensby's personality shines through in this picture. I did not set this up - Avensby has the ability to get under the blanket, turn around, and lie like this. This is quite common for her to do. Taken in low light with a smartphone, so the picture is low quality.
Taken: April 2021.

two tuxedo cats and an orange tabby cat

Monday April 26, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I could not resist this one from April of 2009. The big tuxedo cat is Cornelius, the smaller tuxedo cat is Andi, and sadly cut off, is Leon the orange tabby - Andi's brother. Andi and Leon were about 6 months old here. If you look to the April 10, 16 & 17 picture, you can see Andi at about 12 1/2 years old - 12 years on from this picture. Cornelius and Leon are both gone now. They are on my makeshift bed in the loft of the log cabin I lived in. I was standing under the loft when I took the April 24 picture.
Taken: April 2009.

tuxedo cat, two forest cats & orange tabby cat

Sunday April 25, 2021 Pic of the Day.

The previous two days are pictures from April of 2007 and 2009. So, on that theme, here is a picture from April 2009. This is in the loft of the log cabin in the woods I lived in for 5 years. These are 4 of the 5 kittens that came with the mom cat I took in the previous fall. Daisy on the far left (close up of her for April 21 picture below). Elly-May next, then the orange tabby Leon, and Andi on the stair. They would have been about 6 months old at the time. I still have Daisy, Elly-May and Andi. Leon, his mom (Mumma-Puma) and his sister Chessie all passed away in 2018. You can see Andi and Elly-May together in March of this year in the April 15 picture.
Taken: April 2009.

tuxedo cat

Saturday April 24, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Yesterday, I showed a picture from April 2007 - 14 years ago. I thought I would take a look and see what was going on a year later - April 2008. This is Cornelius in his favourite chair in the log cabin I used to live in. Sometimes I forget how nice that cabin was. My years there with Cornelius and the other cats feels like a dream memory. Sometimes when I feel things are difficult in life, I look back to this time and remember how lucky I was to have this time in a real log cabin in the woods, and to have Cornelius as my friend. It is interesting that memories of a dream and of the past waking life seem exactly the same as time passes. It is also interesting to me that the things that worried me at that time seem inconsequential now, whereas the gift of a friend like Cornelius seems very important.
Taken: April 2008.

tuxedo cat

Friday April 23, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I just randomly decided to see what was going on with the cats 14 years ago in April 2007. I found this picture of Cornelius having a very comfy looking snooze by the woodstove in the log cabin I lived in at the time. I see that the pink of his nose and toes matches the pink in the blanket. I can't remember if I noticed that at the time.
Taken: April 2007.

forest cat

Thursday April 22, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Fiona enjoying the morning sun. I find her eyes in this picture are very interesting to look at. Calm, wise & ancient.
Taken: May 2019.

forest cat

Wednesday April 21, 2021 Pic of the Day.

This is Daisy. I show very few pictures of her because she is so reclusive and hard, actually nearly impossible, to take pictures of. I have many thousands of pictures of my cats, but I might have 30 pictures of Daisy, and about 3/4 of those are a blur. She is quite beautiful, and her colours are so rich. She is about 2 1/2 years old here. This picture was taken in the log cabin in the woods I lived in for a few years in the lake district of Central Ontario, Canada. No hot water, not even running cold water and only a woodstove for heat.
Taken: June 2011.

maine coon and tuxedo cat

Tuesday April 20, 2021 Pic of the Day.

A cat tree moment with Norton and Dexter. They must wonder what the camera is and why I spend so much time with it. I've set it down by them, and they go and look at it and sniff it, but seem unimpressed.
Taken: December 2020.

tuxedo and orange tabby cat

Monday April 19, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Three years ago around this time. Avensby and Leon enjoying some April sunshine and warm air. I put this pine shelf up by the window for the cats, and they love it. They can be right by the windows and watch the wildlife outside, or just sleep in the sun with the fresh air.
Taken: April 2018.

maine coon cat

Sunday April 18, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I was looking for a different picture, when I saw this one of Norton on the glass table in the sunroom taken from below. I was lying on my back with the camera pointed up. Looks a little like Norton is floating in space.
Taken: August 2018.

Forest cat and tuxedo cat

Saturday April 17, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Lot of Andi pictures lately. I've mentioned before that Andi is a good communicator with her facial expressions and look in her eyes. This is a picture of Andi telling me that she is hungry. I get this look a lot, as Andi is a foodie. Normally, she turns away if I try to take her picture when I get this look from her, but I happened to be reading on my phone, and quickly got this picture in before she had a chance to realise what I was up to. And just in case you are wondering - yes, I got up right after this and fed her.
Taken: April 2021.

Forest cat and tuxedo cat

Thursday April 15, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I have a particular fascination with cat friendships and family relationships. I think it comes from growing up hearing that cats were solitary animals, then when having multiple cats living with me, I discovered that is just not true. It may be in some cases, but is not universal. They are just like humans overall in that some are very social, some are solitary. This pair are sisters from the same litter. They are 12 1/2 years old here, and have been close like this right from when I first met them at about 8 weeks old in the late fall of 2008. Andi is the tuxedo, and Elly-May on the right. Picture is taken at night with no flash and low light on a smartphone, so it is not the best, but it does show a natural relaxed closeness.
Taken: April 2021.

orange tabby, maine coon, tuxedo cat

Wednesday April 14, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I dreamt of Leon last night (orange tabby), so I went back looking for pictures of him. I saw this one of Leon, Norton and Dexter eating. I remember taking this shot just to show how amazing Norton's tail is. Picture was taken 3 years ago yesterday.
Taken: April 2018.

tuxedo cat

Tuesday April 13, 2021 Pic of the Day.

It can be hard to take natural looking pictures of Dexter. He is very curious, and tends to carefully watch what I'm doing when I've got the camera out. Most of the pictures I have of him are the "cute, curious cat look" type of picture. Nothing wrong with those, but I try for pictures that capture the spirit of the cat as if I wasn't even in the room. I got lucky here because something was going on outside, and I was (for the most part) ignored. One thing I want to point out that I've not been able to capture in a photo very well before: If you look above his eye, you will see a frosting of white hairs that gives an eyebrow look. He is the only tuxedo cat in my clowder that has that. I really like the look, it gives a distinguished quality to his masculine, handsome face. He was a feral tomcat for the first 4 years of his life, and he still is a tomcat at heart. He is 13 years old here.

Monday April 12, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Not the most flattering picture of Avensby, but I still like it. (I think she was watching light dance on the ceiling that was reflecting from my glasses on my head or the camera.) For one thing, I just like the overall colours of this picture. Half of the background is a warm reddish brown, the other half is a cool light blue. I like that this picture somehow manages to capture that Avensby is actually quite a small cat. But the thing I like best is that this picture shows her very large and beautiful cascading whiskers.

silver abyssinian and maine coon cats

Sunday April 11, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I was looking for another picture when I saw this one. For April 04 & 05, I showed pictures of Norton with Patty. I said Norton had been trying to be friends with Patty for about a year. But this picture is from 2 years ago, so Norton had been trying for at least 2 years. Time for me is going faster than I can keep up with. Update: I just discovered I used this picture before, on April 22 of 2019 picture of the day shortly after I took it. Here is what I wrote about the picture: "Happy Easter. This may just look like two cats who are close cuddled up together. But to me, this is an amazing shot. First, Patty (the one whose face you cannot see) is not known as a cat that gets along easily with other cats. Second, Just five minutes before this, these two were having it out. Norton (you see his face) was chasing after Patty, and Patty was hissing and swinging at him. I tried to break it up, but they just ignored me. I left the room, came back and saw this. I was actually a bit in shock and stood there looking in disbelief before realizing this was a cute picture and I should take a shot. I guess they worked out whatever the dispute was about." I had forgotten all that, and now the picture makes more sense to me again.

Saturday April 10, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Andi looking over her shoulder at me taking her picture. I think by this point she had enough of me taking her picture. Andi is the most gentle, emotionally stable cat I've ever met. She is 12 1/2 here.

Friday April 09, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Hmmm. I'm not sure if Avensby is trying to sleep, or she is practicing her latest dance moves. What I can say for sure is that Avensby is neither from Peru nor is she produce, but she is Cat 1.

Thursday April 08, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Fiona in the basket at the top of the cat tree. Fiona is really small, the basket is actually normal sized for cats. This is from two years ago today. It's funny, as I was looking at the pictures from two years ago, I realised that things slowly change in imperceptible ways that add up over time. Fiona doesn't go up to the cat tree baskets anymore. At some point in the last two years, her spot became the basket on the shelf in by the window. A chair moved, a new item, an item gone, and two years later things look quite different.

Dexter in the sunroom on one of the better days this year so far. The cats really enjoy the sunroom in the spring before the leaves come out on the trees. The trees in my yard are so mature, that by summer, the sunroom ironically gets very little sun. Mind you, I remember in the mid 1970's when the trees were still small, the sunroom was more like an outdoor oven in mid-summer on a hot, sunny day. You win some, you loose some. That iron & glass table that Dexter is on was purchased in 1970 or 1971 for the kitchen in this house, and was used there until the wall was taken out between the dining room and kitchen in the second half of the 1980's. Then, it was moved to the sunroom, and has been there since. I was the one who took the wall out, and I think of that as recent, but counting the years, it was 34 or 35 years ago. Ah well. I have fond memories of swimming in the pool back in the early 1970's, then having supper in the sunroom around 7 or 8pm to get away from bugs as evening came on. Now everything in and around the house is very dilapidated and old looking, but I remember when the glass and white sunroom was so cool and modern looking, and I felt like I was living the life. Now I'm just an old ailurophile with a clowder in a ramshackle. LOL.

Tuesday April 06, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Fiona spends a lot of time in the basket on the window shelf just looking out the window, or blankly staring forward in what appears to be contemplation. I just love her green/yellow eyes. She trusts me, so I can get in close like this without her reacting, and capture her natural state as if I wasn't there taking pictures of her. She is about 10 1/2 years old here.

silver abyssinian and maine coon cats

Monday April 05, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Yesterday, I showed another picture of these two easter bunnies. This picture was taken on my lap. For years they lived together with me, and they basically ignored each other. In the past year, Norton has decided Patty is going to be his friend. I just laughed at first, thinking "good luck Norton, Patty won't give in". I was wrong, and Norton's effort paid off with a new friend. If Patty can make friends at over 11 years old, then cats must be social creatures at the core. Now the big test is Margarita - see the April 1 picture. Even Norton won't tread that path.

Sunday April 04, 2021 Pic of the Day.

I thought for Easter I'd show a picture of these two bunnies. Norton on the right eventually won over Patty and they are now friends. Patty was a tough nut to crack, but Norton was very persistent.

tuxedo cat

Saturday April 03, 2021 Pic of the Day.

Avensby. I can't get enough of looking at cat's faces. Avensby is an intense, serious personality. When she is playful, she is like a tornado in the room. Lamps, pictures and anything else in her path gets knocked over. All this from a very small cat. She can also climb like a squirrel. One of the most verticle cats I've ever had.
Taken: March 2021.

maine coon cat

Friday April 02, 2021 Pic of the Day.

This cat, Norton, is the exact polar opposite of Margarita shown yesterday. Norton is silly, fun, innocent & friendly. Norton wants to be everyone's friend and play all the time.
Taken: March 2021.

tuxedo cat

Thursday April 01, 2021 Pic of the Day.

This picture captures Margarita's personality so well I can't stop looking at it. Let me explain Margarita by a made-up conversation with her:
Me: Hey Margarita, did you know it's April?
Margarita: Meh, who cares.
Me: Mind if I take your picture Margarita?
Margarita: Knock yourself out.
Margarita is actually very affectionate with me, but she has an attitude, and this picture captures it. I really like her - more and more as time goes by. I think part of the reason is that she is so different from most cats I've known, I find her fascinating. She isn't depressed by the way, she just finds cats and most things boring or annoying.
