On June 29, 2016 I got Avensby, an eight week old kitten born to a feral mom in my neighbour's garden shed. I set up a pen for her suspended from the ceiling so that she would be able to see all that was going on in the room with the other cats, and to be face to face with me when I interacted with her. In the pen was a basket with a fleece blanket which she is using in this picture. There was a small litter box which you can see in the lower part of this picture. She had food, water and a two layer cardboard box with holes and tunnels that I made for her which she really enjoyed. There was a sisal rope over a cedar log scratching post which I made which you can see along the left of the picture. There was also the yellow plastic container that I secured to the top of the pen that had toys in it. She would jump up into it and play in there. I kept her in the pen for about 10 days, with more and more supervised outings in the house. By doing it this way, she got to know the other cats by smell and by being able to watch them, and the other cats got used to her smell in the house, and got to know her slowly. The integration went quite smoothly.

Happy Avensby Day!! This picture is taken just a few hours after I brought Avensby home from the garden shed she was born in next door to me. She is confused here, but by the next day she was a happy playful kitten. She is 8 weeks old here, give or take a day or two. She was a very small kitten, and you can see that when you compare her to the toy knitted mouse on the lower left of the picture.

I sat down in the sunroom for a break, and put my feet up. Within 2 mintues this was the scene. Andi on my lap, Dexter on the table.

This is a scan of a picture taken with a film camera in either 1990 or 1991. From left to right: Itty-Bitty, Xxaque and Felemur. Nice to see these three boys again. Itty-Bitty was a very sickly cat who did not live long. He was a local feral cat. Xxaque (pronounced "Zzzak") looks good here. Felemur (Fah-lee-mer) looks so young here. A year or two after this picture was taken, Itty-Bitty was gone, Xxaque left us in 2004, and Felemur in 2009. This picture seems so long ago and far away to me.

In 2001 we raised a baby grey squirrel that was somehow left without a mom. Before that, back in the late 1990's I befriended a squirrel that I named Piggy. I called him/her that because his/her little nose looked like a pig's nose. Piggy was super friendly, and believe it or not, a very calm and slower moving creature. He/she was not like any squirrel I've known before or since. If I put my arm out to the tree Piggy was on, he/she would saunter onto my arm, up my arm, and sniff around my head to check me out. His/her calm, slow moving, friendly demeanor even won over the cats. Here Piggy is in the house eating with my cat Felemur just watching. We would leave the back door open in the summer, and I can remember many times Piggy wandering into the house, checking things out, and getting on the arm of the couch and waiting for a snack. I think this picture is 1997, but it could have been 1998. I'm fairly sure Piggy never came back around 1999, but I didn't write the date on the back of the picture, and it's too long ago for me to be more specific.

Gold goes with silver, and since yesterday's picture was Leon, a gold coloured cat, today it is fitting for my silver coloured cat Patty, or Pretty Patty Puddy as she is referred to by me, to be featured.

When I was looking for yesterday's picture, I saw this one. This is Leon relaxing on a cat blanket.

From the summer of 2015. These cats are feral, but being fed by my neighbour next door who has since passed away. The mom and one of the kittens is keeping an eye on me. If you look back to the June 4th and June 5th pictures, you will see Norton. Look carefully at this picture, and you will see Norton beside his mom with his tail up.

I don't know how many times I've said on this site that Margarita is a most perplexing cat. She has the most unusual look in her eyes, or expression on her face, that I've seen in a cat. It would not surprise me if I found out that Margarita was from a different family of cats than most house cats. I'm not seriously suggesting that, its just that Margarita is quite different in personality from all the other cats I've known. She quite likes me, and is on my lap in this picture. She is around 7 years old here. I want to add, Margarita has a bold sense of humour. She will find a place to hide that is around the height of my head - such as a shelf - and patiently wait for me to go by, then when I'm close to her (and I have not noticed her), she will reach out and slap me in the head as fast as a snake striking. No claws, just a good slap. She then jumps down and shakes her head around and rolls around in pure glee having won that round. If I notice her as I'm close, she will just look at me, and enjoy a pat.

Avensby's nose is a colour match to her toes (see yesterday's picture). Also, look at the Wednesday, June 3 picture of Cornelius and notice the very similar nose and toes colours to Avensby.

Avensby has cute toes. I like the pink and black toes with the white fur. She sure keeps the fur on the bottom of her feet clean.

I was looking at pictures from 2 years ago, and came upon this one that really reminds me of the picture I used for the June 1 picture of the day. This is Avensby and Leon on the table in the sunroom. This picture is taken through a window.

Felemur, my Lynx Point Siamese outside in the summer of 2005. Felemur, like all my cats, was a found stray. He is 16 years old here, and lived to 20.

Cornelius with his teddy bear. The bear was my father's until he died. I think I gave it to my dad when he was in the hospital within the last few years of his life. After my father died, I got the teddy bear back, and when I got Cornelius, he decided it was his. I have numerous pictures of him with it. He quite often used it as a pillow. I even saw him walk from one place to another with it, set it down, the go to sleep with it. Cornelius had it until the late fall of 2008 when the 5 kittens and their mom came to be part of the family after the barn they lived in burned down, and were left homeless in November. The kittens destroyed it fairly quickly. I felt badly for Cornelius, but he was unfazed, and in fact, he loved having the kittens around so much, I think he forgot about the teddy bear. To this day, I'm still amazed when I think of how Cornelius, who was a 4 year old feral Tomcat when I found him, loved kittens so much and was very kind and loving to them. They, as you can see in the June 1 picture, adored Cornelius.

I was trying to get a picture of Margarita, who is very hard to capture in a picture, and this is what I got. She had been napping in a cute pose just a second before I pressed the button on the camera. Because I find cats so fascinating, I like this picture. You get to study at leisure a cat doing something like yawning in a picture that in real life goes by too fast to look at in detail. Margarita only has 6 teeth left. After I took her in, the vet discovered she had a nasty condition called "Tooth Resorption". It is also known as FORL (feline odontoclastic resorptive lesion). Margarita was a very sad cat when I got her (she was feral 2 year old), but after the bad teeth were removed, she changed completely. Luckily for Margarita, she is a fan of wet food and not dry.

Not often are these two together. Both are really nice cats, both are smart cats, but you could not have two more different personalities. The closest one is Andi who was born a barn cat in a heavily wooded area of Central Ontario, and behind is Dexter who was a feral Tomcat from the city. They never bother each other, as both seem to have respect for each other. Andi is the matriarch of the family - a role she took on when her mom died, and Dexter respects that, whereas Dexter is the bold Tomcat type, and Andi seems to accept that as the way it should be. All that said, they tend to have very little to do with one another, and live in separate worlds in the same space. Andi is the most consistenly emotionally stable cat I've EVER met. I look up to her for that, and try to be more like her. Dexter is tough acting, but very sensitive and his moods shift around. A few months ago, Andi was at the vet, and I was concerned about her weight, as she weighs about 17 pounds. The vet checked her out and told me: Andi has almost no fat on her - she is just a very muscular, large cat.

I was trying to get a close up picture of Andi's face when she was sleeping. Turns out, she was fully aware what I was up to.

Though I've told this story many times on this site, the basic idea is that Avensby took to this asperagus box when she was a kitten, and still uses it almost daily for sleeping. There seems to be a never ending number of ways she fits herself in. The asperagus box is securly mounted to the cat tree so it cannot fall off with her in it.

People who know me know how concerned I get about the cats if I'm away from home. To help me stop worrying about the cats, I installed a "Cat Cam" in my room so I can look in on the cats if I'm not home. This is a capture from a couple of months ago showing what was going on while I was out. Fiona is in the dog pen because she was sick and the vet asked me to isolate her. You can see her in the basket in the pen. By the way, she has the basket, water, food and her own litter box in there. On the far right, close to the camera is Margarita with her back to the camera on the window shelf in a basket. Dexter is eating over near the fish tank, and Patty is on the floor in front of the dog pen. There are cats in the cat tree top baskets, but when curled up and sleeping, you can't see them. If I speak to them through my phone and camera, the cats will pop their heads up in the baskets, and I can see them. I only do that if I'm not seeing anyone. When I see a scene like this, I know things are at least OK.

Avensby fits this basket like it was custom taylored for her. Even the handle seems custom made as a headrest.

I came into the room and saw Fiona just sitting like this. This picture captures her character - and her wonky eyebrow whiskers.

Three cats on my lap. Margarita with her back to the camera on the left, Andi, the tuxedo looking toward the camera, and Patty sleeping in one of her tangled up sleeping postures. There is actually a 4th cat here - in the upper left on the shelf you can just see Dexter's tail hanging down.

I've put up a few pictures that capture cats doing amazing things with their tongues. This is Norton licking the end of his nose with his tongue. If you don't think this is amazing, go to a mirror and try it yourself.

This was taken in the middle of February of this year. The cats get bored during winter, and even though they are indoor cats, they don't like the cold sunroom in the winter. So, they end up playing a lot this time of year. Here Dexter (Tuxedo) and Norton are playing "Haywagon". Dexter is driving the tractor with his paw on the steering wheel, and Norton is on the hay wagon being pulled around. It took me a while to figure out what they were doing. And yes, winter can be long for Grampa too.

I went back to June of 2003 to look for pictures of Cornelius. January of 2003 was when I got my first decent quality digital camera, and the summer of 2003 I took a lot of pictures. This is Cornelius on the floor near the back door. One thing anyone who knows Cornelius remembers him for is the intense look in his eyes. This picture is taken about 10 months after he was found near death on a gravel road in a fairly remote area. We were still getting to know each other, but had become close by then. Cornelius is the reason for this website, and he is the cat on the homepage at the top looking out on the lake, and the picture below lying on his back.

Dexter sometimes leaps up onto my shoulder - from the floor - and wants to get a ride on me while I walk around. One time when he did this, I had my phone in hand, walked into the bathroom with Dexter as my passenger, and took this picture in the bathroom mirror. He is watching the screen of the phone camera here.

I must have used this picture before on this site, but I looked around and did not see it. It is one of my favourite pictures. Andi when she was 9 months old, and Cornleius when he was 11 years old. Andi adored Cornelius, and that is very clear here. Even if I have used this picture before, that's OK as I love it.
