tuxedo cat in window

Thursday December 31, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Another year gone. I thought I'd look back 10 years and see what was going on. Andi about a month before she turned 2 years old. In the window of the log cabin in the woods I lived in for 5 years. Andi was a kitten of a barn cat from a farm down the road.
Taken: August 2010.

cats in cat tree

Wednesday December 30, 2020 Pic of the Day.

2019 Christmas day picture. Norton keeps guard as his friend Avensby lies inside her asperagus box on the cat tree. Norton's tail - wow!
Taken: December 2019.

cats in cat tree

Tuesday December 29, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I was taking a picture of Dexter on the sleigh and Norton sitting on the cat tree, when Norton suddenly turned around and climbed up the leg of the cat tree to get to the top level. Some of the cats go through the holes and steps I made to change levels on the cat tree, and a some climb the cat tree legs like cats would climb a tree outside. Norton is a climber. The cat tree is made from Easter White Cedar and White Pine which is quite soft wood. This is perfect for cat's claws, and they use their claws freely on the cat tree - which I encourage.
Taken: December 2018.

tuxedo cats in cat tree

Monday December 28, 2020 Pic of the Day.

"Maybe if we ignore grampa, he'll stop taking our picture". Nope, not going to happen Avensby (left), Margarita (centre) & Andi (right).
Taken: December 2018.

tuxedo cat in boxe

Sunday December 27, 2020 Pic of the Day.

When I was looking for a picture to use yesterday on boxing day, I also found this one. This is why I avoid using the flash when taking pictures of cats, though in this case, it is interesting to look at. Margarita in the box, and Norton in behind.
Taken: December 2015.

four tuxedo cats in boxes

Saturday December 26, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Yes, it is boxing day. And here is a boxing day picture. Cats are boxed up and ready to put away until next Christmas. Dexter in back, Margarita on the left, Avensby in the centre, and Andi on the right.
Taken: August 2016.

tuxedo cat with stuffed toy cow's sleigh

Friday December 25, 2020 Pic of the Day.

This picture was taken during the holidays in December 2011. It is Andi when she was 3 years old sleeping with her favourite toy. Somehow, this stuffed toy cow went missing and I've not been able to find anything else Andi likes as much. The reason I chose this picture for Christmas day, is that when I gave this toy cow to Andi, it was like watching a small child open a gift they instantly fell in love with. And just in case you are wondering, no, I did not set this toy cow here while Andi was sleeping, this is what I saw when I came into the room. I just grabbed the camera and took pictures until she woke up.
Taken: December 2011.

tuxedo cats pulling Santa's sleigh

Thursday December 24, 2020 Pic of the Day.

The painting I use for Christmas Eve. Santa and his tuxedo cats bringing gifts to everyone and every being all over the world. Merry Christmas and much happiness to all.
A painting done for me in 1975.

three kittens mom cat and tuxedo cat

Wednesday December 23, 2020 Pic of the Day.

While looking for another picture, I came across this one. Even though there are no lights or Christmas tree, this is about as Christmas for me as it gets. Log cabin, wood fire, three kittens on a chair, giant tuxedo cat in front of the fire. And, if you look closely, you can see the mom cat beside the woodstove in the blue flower pot. I knew at that time, that it was a special moment in my life. I also knew that like everything else, it was going to end some day, so I took pictures to remember when I got older. This is one of those pictures that takes me right back. I remember this moment as clearly as anything I did yesterday even though it is basically 12 years ago. From left to right: kittens Andi, Daisy & Leon. Cornelius in front of the fireplace and Mumma-Puma in the blue flower pot.
Taken: January 2009.

tuxedo kitten in basket with orange tabby

Tuesday December 22, 2020 Pic of the Day.

"Uncle" Leon with Avensby who was about 7 1/2 months old here. Leon was 8 in this picture. They are not related, but I called him uncle Leon because of how kind and caring he was toward Avensby when she was a kitten. The other two male cats also were kind and caring toward Avensby, but not the female cats - they just ignored her for the most part, though a couple would tollerate her if she tried to cuddle up. For the past four years, I've been trying to make sense of why only the males were overtly caring to Avensby. The fuzzy conclusion I can make is that this is similar to the commonly held idea about cats being solitary animals, which in my experience is bizarrely off the mark. I think as a child, I had absorbed the memes that male cats were not paternal, while females were naturally maternal. Experience has a sharp blade for cutting through false concepts. Also, when Leon was a kitten and Cornelius was a 10 year old male (who was a 4 year old Tomcat when found), Cornelius was kind and caring toward Leon and his sisters, so this behaviour of Leon in this picture is not just because Avensby is female.
Taken: December 2016.

tuxedo cat in basket in sun

Monday December 21, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Wow, does this ever look comfortable. Here we are at the winter solstice, and the warm tones of the August sunlight look so inviting. I think Avensby has perfected the art of relaxation.
Taken: August 2020.

tuxedo cat and Maine Coon looking cat

Sunday December 20, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Another picture of Norton and Dexter (see yesterday's picture). Take note of their left front legs crossing. This is not uncommon for them to do, and is something I've seen cats do that are very close. Dexter will do this with me as well. If I'm sitting or lying down, Dexter will come over and set one of his paws on my hand and give a gentle squeeze.
Taken: December 2020.

tuxedo cat and Maine Coon looking cat

Saturday December 19, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Best friends Norton on the left and Dexter on the right.
Taken: December 2020.

tuxedo cat

Friday December 18, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I was looking at pictures from December 2017 and found this one. I mentioned in the description for the December 11 picture that Avensby has many interesting sitting postions. This is a good example of another one. I see her sitting like this with her front legs curled in quite often. Other cats sit like this of course, but the way she does it makes it look like her legs are boneless.
Taken: December 2017.

calico cat forest cat

Thursday December 17, 2020 Pic of the Day.

This is Mumma-Puma on the left, and her daughter Elly-May on the right. Mumma-Puma was 14 in this picture, and Elly-May was 10. Mumma-Puma was not well here, and she passed away 11 days after this picture was taken. During Mumma-Puma's last couple of weeks, her 3 remaining daughters stayed close to her & groomed her. I never know quite how to respond when I hear people and even vets say that cats are solitary animals, and that they don't know any concept of family, etc. In my 57 years of having and observing untold numbers of cats, I strongly disagree with those concepts. It was to show people that cats are not solitary that was one of the reasons I started taking so many pictures of cats long ago. I would see cats acting as true friends, and would take pictures just to show people. If cats don't know anything about family, why was it just Mumma-Puma's 3 daughters of all the cats that stuck close to her and groomed her when she was sick?
Taken: December 2018.

Tuxedo cat in basket by window

Wednesday December 16, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Not the most flattering picture of Avensby, but I still like it. I'm not sure why, but I find it interesting.
Taken: April 2020.

Tuxedo cat sunning in pen in window

Tuesday December 15, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I used to put a small dog pen in the window which would stick out halfway. It was a great fit as it was snug on the sides, and the window would come down to the top of the pen. Cornelius loved that spot in the summer for watching animals and birds in the yard. The pen was left open on the inside, so he could come and go as he pleased. From the outside, it was about 7 feet off the ground, giving him a great overall view.
Taken: June 2004.

Tuxedo cat sunning in cat tree between floors

Monday December 14, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby in the morning sun on the cat tree. It is not unusual to see cats in this spot watching squirrels and birds in the trees outside the window, or just catching some sunlight in the morning.
Taken: February 2020.

forest cat in a basket

Sunday December 13, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Fiona in a basket by the window. She is so tiny, that even at 10 1/2 years old in this picture, she looks kitten like. I quite like her wild and bendy eyebrow whiskers. They have been like that from when I first saw her.
Taken: March 2020.

tuxedo cat in cat tree

Saturday December 12, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby enjoying the basket by the window in the evening.
Taken: March 2020.

tuxedo cat in cat tree

Friday December 11, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby has many odd sitting positions, this being one of them.
Taken: November 2018.

cats in window with winter outside

Thursday December 10, 2020 Pic of the Day.

In 7 weeks, this picture will be 2 years old. That really struck me, as when I saw it, I thought it was taken early last winter. Dexter and Norton enjoying the sun and view on a cold winter's day. There is something so nice about a blue sky, sun and fresh snow.
Taken: February 2019.

tuxedo cat log cabin fireplace woodstove

Wednesday December 09, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Cornelius enjoying the woodstove fire in the log cabin that was being restored. This was December 2006, just a couple of days before Christmas. Within one year, the walls and ceiling of the cabin were done. It seemed slow to me at the time, but now it seems like I got it done quickly.
Taken: December 2006.

long hair grey tabby cat

Tuesday December 08, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Every once and a while I get lucky and get a picture that really captures the true personality of the cat I'm taking the picture of. This one really captures Norton's gentle nature.
Taken: February 2020.

tuxedo cat in basket

Monday December 07, 2020 Pic of the Day.

My guess is that Dexter is feeling relaxed here. Not sure what Norton is looking at.
Taken: March 2020.

tuxedo cat

Sunday December 06, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby contemplating the meaning of life.
Taken: February 2020.

tuxedo cat

Saturday December 05, 2020 Pic of the Day.

"Okay Dexter, look as cute as you can". Considering he's in a basket on a sleigh, this makes for a picture that is almost Christmas themed.
Taken: February 2020.

grey longhair cat

Friday December 04, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Norton watching the world go by from the sleigh.
Taken: January 2020.

silver abyssinian cat

Thursday December 03, 2020 Pic of the Day.

My beautiful Patty cat on the zero gravity chair.
Taken: December 2019.

tuxedo cat

Wednesday December 02, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I love the colours in this picture. Dexter beside his crop of cat grass on a beautiful fall day.
Taken: November 2018.

tuxedo cat

Tuesday December 01, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Cornelius sleeping by the fire. The fireplace is just out of shot on the left. Now that we are in December, I think of Christmas. Even though there are no Christmas decorations or tree in this picture, a cat sleeping by a fire in a log cabin seems very Christmas like in an old fashioned kind of way. Well, at least it does to me.
Taken: December 2007.
