tuxedo cat on rocking chair

Monday August 31, 2020 Pic of the Day.

For me, August is all about Cornelius. So on the last day of the month, I thought I'd look back on one of the earlier pictures I have of him. See you in September.
Taken: January 2003.

tuxedo cat on sleigh

Sunday August 30, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby gets this look quite often. Not fully sure how to read it. Whenever I take a picture, I never try to get their attention by moving something like a toy or my hand. I've found that makes the picture look unnatural. I just take enough pictures of them so they are used to the idea, and they can just be themselves.
Taken: August 2019.

maine coon like cat face picture

Saturday August 29, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I think the colours and patterns on Norton's coat are striking. Notice the black around his eyes which looks like eye liner. He is hard to take close up pictures of like this because he is so playful and starts trying to grab the camera.
Taken: November 2019.

tuxedo cat in asperagus box

Friday August 28, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Yet another picture of Avensby in her asperagus box. She loves this box, and I love taking pictures of her in it.
Taken: November 2019.

two forest cats on a chair

Thursday August 27, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Fiona (closest to camera) and Elly-May. Though I don't know if they are related, I'm pretty sure they must be as they were found in the same remote area. Although, I guess it could just be a common colour pattern in the area where they were found.
Taken: November 2019.

two cats in a box by a window

Wedneday August 26, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby and Norton in a box on the window shelf.
Taken: November 2019.

three cats in a window

Tuesday August 25, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Three cats enjoying the window shelf. From left to right: Fiona, Norton & Andi.
Taken: July 2020.

three tuxedo cats in a sunroom

Monday August 24, 2020 Pic of the Day.

My three tuxedo girls in the sunroom on a beautiful September day. Furthest from camera is Avensby, Andi in the middle, and Margarita is closest.
Taken: September 2017.

cat in flowers

Sunday August 23, 2020 Pic of the Day.

This is Dennis or Dee Dee in a box of silk flowers. What a sweet picture. This picture was sent to me. Taken by: PJ Walsh.
Taken: July 2020.

tuxedo cat

Saturday August 22, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby in a cardboard box playing with a ball. She really has the ability to look "kitten" cute even though she is 4 years old. This picture was taken in low light without a flash, which is why it is grainy.
Taken: August 2020.

Mother cat nursing 5 kittens

Friday August 21, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Another picture from January 2009. Although I have taken in many cats since the 1980's, the fall of 2008 was the first time I had a mother cat with all her kittens. I learned so much about how a mother cat takes care of, and disciplines her kittens. It was also great fun for myself and the two older cats I had at the time. It was especially fun for Cornelius, as much to my great surprise, he loved the kittens, and they loved him. It noticeably brought joy to his life as he was older. Very much like the way grandparents find great joy in grandchildren. He would play with them, cuddle up with them, and most fun for him was when he would lie on the floor after playing, and they would keep playing around him, leaping onto and over him, and chasing each other around him. This picture is of the mom cat, Mumma-Puma, and all five of her kittens from her last litter nursing.
Taken: January 2009.

4 cats on a couch in a log cabin

Thursday August 20, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I saw this picture when I was looking for the August 18 picture. This picture was taken in the log cabin I used to live in. From left to right: Leon, Mumma-Puma, Felemur & Cornelius. Mumma-Puma was a larger than average female cat. Felemur was an average sized cat. Leon was about 4 months old. Cornelius would have be about 11 years old here.
Taken: January 2009.

tuxedo cat in cat cave

Wedneday August 19, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Avensby in the cat cave on the sleigh on the side of the cat tree. I was looking for her, and couldn't find her. Kept looking, and saying her name, when I heard a cat trilling sound in the direction of the cat tree, then my eye caught this scene.
Taken: August 2020.

mother and son cats

Tuesday August 18, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Today is the two year anniversary of the passing of my good friend Leon. Very much missed by me and the other cats. He was a cat that got along with everyone. Friendly, sweet and quite silly. This is a picture of him in January of 2009 when he was about four months old. I lived in a log cabin in the woods of Central Ontario at the time. His mom was a barn cat that was left homeless when it burned down in November of 2008. Leon, his mom and his four sisters became a permanant part of the family. Yesterday's picture is of Leon with his mom when he was 6 1/2 years old. That is 20 year old Felemur in front of the wood stove enjoying the heat.
Taken: January 2009.

mother and son cats

Monday August 17, 2020 Pic of the Day.

On the left is Mumma-Puma and the right is Leon. They are mother and son. Leon was 6 1/2 years old here, and Mumma-Puma would have been 10 or 10 1/2.
Taken: February 2015.

tuxedo cat on handrail

Sunday August 16, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Cornelius waiting for me to finish hanging up the laundry so we can go down to the beach. He is on the railing of the little deck for putting laundry on the clothesline. I took this picture because I was so amazed at how he would patiently wait for me to finish before walking together to the beach. Taken at Aylen Lake, Ontario. Below is what I wrote last year on August 16 for the picture of the day. I copy it here, because I can't find a way of saying it any better:
August the 16th is the day Cornelius died in 2011. We had been together for 9 years and 1 day. August 16 is a sad day for me, but it is the day I remember all the cats I've had that have passed. I chose this picture because it brings back the memories for me of how happy he was at that time, and how he managed to always extract the best from life. I don't think I've met another cat you could take with you on vacation who would not be scared, and who wouldn't try to run away. I would never do that with any cat I've had before or since. It used to amaze me: in the morning after eating, I would open the door, and we would walk to the beach and docks - no leash needed, no need to carry him. He had never seen this place before, but he was fully in charge. We would spend time at the beach and docks, then we would walk back to the house, eat lunch and he would sleep. He even enjoyed the car rides. I had a pen mounted in the back seat on a box so he could see a 360 degree view. He just loved watching the world go by in the car. I had a saying for Cornelius and the way he handled life: "Cornelius - King of all that is".
Taken: October 2006.

tuxedo cat sleeping

Saturday August 15, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Happy Cornelius Day! August 15, 2002 Cornelius was found near death on a gravel road in a remote area of Southwestern Ontario. We were riding my road licenced dirt bike and stopped for a break (If you are interested in motorcycles, you can see a picture of the motorcycle with me and two other cats on the home page at the bottom of the page). Within 10 seconds, a very sick cat came over to the motorcycle from out of the corn crop, and got under it with his head resting on the rear tire, then passed out cold. He was very sick. After some discussion, we put him in the backpack, I put it on my chest, rested him on the gas tank, and rode home the 45 minutes with him in it. I won't repeat the long story here, but Cornelius changed my life completely, forever. This is a picture of him resting after eating lunch after spending the morning on the beach at Aylen Lake, Ontario in the fall of 2006. I think this time at Aylen Lake was the best time of Cornelius' life. He was so happy there. He loved the lake, the beach, the boats and spending time on the docks. The picture of Cornelius on the beach at the top of the home page is taken 2 days after this one.
Taken: September 2006.

tuxedo cat using stone oven as house

Friday August 14, 2020 Pic of the Day.

You have to look carefully, but Cornelius is using this old stone oven as a house. This is from the time we were at Aylen Lake Ontario by Algonquin Park. We would go for walks, and Cornelius really liked to stop and check out this stone oven and spend some time watching the world from the front of it. In the back, to the right is the marina boat house. In the back to the left is a maroon red and white boat. In the back, centre is Aylen Lake.
Taken: September 2006.

tuxedo cat in a basket

Thursday August 13, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Andi enjoying the sun in a basket on the window shelf.
Taken: August 2020.

tuxedo cat in a sunroom

Wedneday August 12, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Margarita through the window in the sunroom. She is so hard to take pictures of because of the way she moves in quick bursts.
Taken: April 2018.

cats in a sunroom

Tuesday August 11, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Starting from the left - Norton, Dexter & Leon. All the boys in the family out in the sunroom together on a bright, sunny April day.

tuxedo cats on snowflake blanket

Monday August 10, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I was taking this picture of Andi in very low light without a flash to see how well my camera on my new phone would do in these conditions. I didn't notice Margarita (left side of picture) until I looked at the picture after it was taken. Dexter on the right, who I knew was there. Even though the picture is grainy, it is better than expected as there was only one 60 watt equivalent bulb on in the room. It looks much brighter in this picture than it was in the room.
Taken: August 2020.

tuxedo cats on snowflake blanket

Sunday August 09, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Dexter keeping an eye on what is going on while Avensby snoozes and grampa practices with his new smartphone camera.
Taken: August 2020.

tuxedo cat sleeping in asperagus box

Saturday August 08, 2020 Pic of the Day.

If you have been looking at the pictures of the day for a while, you know how much Avensby loves her asperagus box. Here is yet another picture of her sleeping in the box she can barely fit in. I got this box for her when she was a kitten from a local grocery store. Because it is corrugated plastic instead of cardboard, it has held up for the past 4 years. She has remained unwaveringly attached to this box for the whole 4 years.
Taken: July 2020.

tuxedo cat face close up

Friday August 07, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I was taking pictures to get familiar with the camera on my new phone. Of course, I used the cats as subjects. This was taken in fairly low light, so I'm happy how well it turned out. Avensby was starting to get sleepy watching me.
Taken: August 2020.

forest cat face close up

Thursday August 06, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I was using my smartphone, and Fiona got up on my lap. She was taking a good look at the phone, so I took a picture of her with the phone as she was looking at it. Whenever someone sees Fiona for the first time, it is almost inevitable that they remark on how small she it, and how big her eyes are. Actually, her eyes are the same size as other cats she is related too - the wild Forest Cats of Central Ontario - but because she is so tiny due to her start in life, her eyes look huge, like a cartoon character. My other two very small cats have much smaller eyes that are normal in proportion to their body size. My cat Margarita is just a little bigger than Fiona, but Margarita's eyes are about 2/3 the diameter of Fiona's eyes. Also, Fiona has very long fur - up to 3 inches on her body. Last time I weighed her, she was about 7.5 pounds. She used to hover around 6 pounds most of her life, but she has developed a bit of a tummy now that she is around 10 years old.
Taken: August 2020.

tuxedo cat on Docks at marina on Aylen Lake Ontario

Wedneday August 05, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I'm really enjoying looking at pictures of Cornelius at Aylen Lake Ontario. I think this was his favourite time of his life. He loved the boats, water and the beach. This is Cornelius watching minnows in the shallow water around the docks. I don't think he had ever seen fish before this trip to Aylen Lake, and he was captivated by them. If you know cats, you can see by his tail how happy he was. I found it interesting that he never tried to catch them, just watch them swim around. My only regret during our time at Aylen Lake was that I didn't take even more pictures. Still, I'm very happy that I took as many as I did. Aylen Lake is a large lake for the area, but what you see in this picture is called Moonlight bay. The big part of the lake would be to the left of the picture.
Taken: October 2006.

tuxedo cat and Maine Coon

Tuesday August 04, 2020 Pic of the Day.

I showed a picture taken at the same time as this one on July 29. This is just from a different angle. Norton is in a deep sleep on Dexter's arms (front legs?). These two are very close and this kind of thing happens quite a bit. Dexter is 12 years old, whereas Norton is 5. Dexter is a fairly youthful 12 year old cat, and they play by chasing each other around. This is how they settled in after playing.
Taken: July 2020.

tuxedo cat

Monday August 03, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Cornelius found water fascinating, and was completely unafraid of boats. In fact, he seemed quite interested in them, and would watch them come and go from the marina. Cornelius was found as a four year old feral Tomcat in the middle of corn and soy farming country without any body of water for a long way in any direction. When found, he was suffering from dehydration, so maybe seeing a large body of water is welcome to him for that reason. Who knows, but normally in my experience, large expanses of water are not something cats like being around. This is taken at the marina on Aylen Lake Ontario right beside Algonquin Park.
Taken: October 2006.

silver abyssinian cat

Sunday August 02, 2020 Pic of the Day.

Patty will lie in the oddest positions. This is one of many. Take note of the bed in behind - there are 5 or 6 cats on it.
Taken: January 2015.

tuxedo cat and Australian Sheppard

Saturday August 01, 2020 Pic of the Day.

One of my favorite pictures of Cornelius. On the beach at Aylen Lake Ontario beside the marina. We were on a vacation, and Cornelius made friends with the Australian Sheppard dog that was the dog of the marina owners. Normally, I would never even consider taking a cat on vacation, let alone let them wander free (only while with him), but Cornelius was more like a well trained dog than a cat. As soon as we got there, Cornelius made friends with this dog, and hung out with him on the beach while we were there. The marina owners could not believe their eyes. Cornelius would also enjoy watching the boats come in while on the docks, and would just stand and watch while the boat would come right up to the dock and the people get out. He really enjoyed the dock bobbing up and down when the boat would make waves.
Taken: September 2006.
