Mumma-Puma was a barn cat that was left homeless when the barn she lived in near me burned down. It was quite a tragedy, as 8 horses died in the fire. Mumma-Puma managed to save herself and her 5 very young kittens. She moved the kittens to under the porch of a house across the road from me. I was called by the people living there, and to make a longer story short, I took in all 5 kittens and Mumma-Puma. The Mumma part of the name is because when I got her she was a mom. The Puma part of the name comes from how her meows sounded like a Puma meowing. Also, I just liked the sound of the name. I got her when she was 4 years old, and this is when she was 14 - after almost 10 years of living with me as an indoor cat. I still have 3 of the 5 kittens - 2 have passed away.

Dexter and Norton walked by me together this morning, and it made me think of how they have been close ever since Norton joined the family. Instead of being jealous of another male cat when Norton showed up, Dexter took to him and they became friends. Dexter is the tuxedo.

This is Dennis - the semi-feral cat I featured in the picture of the day with Sugar-Bear on Wednesday, July 26. Picture taken by PW. She titled the picture "The owl and the pussy-cat".
Picture Taken: August 2023.
Today's Quote: There is an old poem called "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat" by Edward Lear. I've quoted it in full below:
I
The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"
II
Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-Tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.
III
"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

Could not resist another picture of Avensby, this time the picture needs no explanation - you can see in her eyes all there is to know.

Avensby still does this kind of thing. She loves to tunnel around under blankets and then come to the edge and rest.

Amazingly, there are cats out there that are not mine. Sugar-Bear on the chair, Dennis by the catnip plant. Dennis is a local semi-feral cat that the person next door feeds, and Sugar-Bear is her cat.

I did not do this. Avensby and Norton were playing above and below the blanket and they stopped for a break like this, and of course, I got out the camera.
Today's Quote:
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
-Martin Niemöller

Andi snoozing in the pen, while Norton snoops around.
Today's Quote: “Caution in handling generally accepted opinions that claim to explain whole trends of history is especially important for the historian of modern times, because the last century has produced an abundance of ideologies that pretend to be keys to history but are actually nothing but desperate efforts to escape responsibility.” - Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

Wednesday July 19, 2023 Pic of the Day.
I took Dexter for a walk and he bee-lined it for the house next door where we visited for a while. He loves visiting with people, which is odd for a cat. I think the chair he is on suits him quite well.

Mom cat (calico) with two daughter cats. Mom cat would have been 11 years old here, and the two daughter cats would have been a few days from 7 years old.
Today's Quote: “As far as I'm concerned, it's a damned shame that a field as potentially dynamic and vital as journalism should be overrun with dullards, bums, and hacks, hag-ridden with myopia, apathy, and complacence, and generally stuck in a bog of stagnant mediocrity." - Hunter S. Thompson
Picture Taken: August 2015.
Saturday July 15, 2023 Pic of the Day.
Tuxedo kitten Avensby eating with the big cats. This was only the 2nd day she was eating with them. She no longer wanted to be separated after 10 days with the family. By this point she wanted to do what the big cats were doing. I kept an eye on things, but as it turned out, the big cats treated her very well.

Today's Quote: “Narcissists are consumed with maintaining a shallow false self to others. They're emotionally crippled souls that are addicted to attention. Because of this they use a multitude of games, in order to receive adoration. Sadly, they are the most ungodly of God's creations because they don't show remorse for their actions, take steps to make amends or have empathy for others. They are morally bankrupt.” - Shannon L. Alder
Picture Taken: July 2015.
Thursday July 13, 2023 Pic of the Day.
I've shown this picture before, but I ran across it again, and like it so much I just had to re-post it. Margarita was very sweet to put up with my antics of covering her with the toy mice and sitting still for a picture. She had been in the family for only 5 months after being found as a feral cat at 2 years old.
Today's Quote: “War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.” - Major General Smedley Butler, United States Marine Corps

Mother and daughter picture. Andi, the tuxedo, is the daughter, and the calico, Mumma-Puma, is the mom. Andi is like a clone of her mom, unlike the other 4 kittens in the litter. Even the fur pattern is identical except where Andi is black, Mumma-Puma is multi coloured. I still have Andi, but Mumma-Puma has been gone since 2018.

Welcome to July 2023. In astrology, were are in Gemini season, which is called the twins. I thought I would at least start off the month with pictures of two cats together. Here we have Patty (short haired) and Norton (long haired). They are on my lap, but I forget what got their attention.
