A very sweet picture to end the month of August. On the left is Chessie, and on the right is her mom, Mumma-Puma. Chessie would have been 5 1/2 here, and her mom was 9 1/2 years old here. They were very close. Both are gone now, so I'm very happy I took these pictures.

A nice picture of Margarita that showes one front leg is black, the other white. This was taken 3 weeks after I got her.

This is the last in the trinity of pictures of Leon and Fiona in the last 3 days. This is a very bittersweet picture for me. The sweet is that it shows the love that Leon and Fiona shared. The bitter is that Leon died exactly one week after this picture was taken. Leon had been to the vet many times in the period preceeding this time. Leon had a tumour in his intestines - most likely pancreatic cancer which was what one of his sisters Chessie died of just about 7 months earlier. You can see Leon is fading here. Fiona knew things were not well and stuck to Leon constantly. She was a great comfort to him. I mentioned yesterday to take note that Fiona was holding Leon's hand in yesterday's picture like she is in this picture. They did this a lot, and if not, Fiona often would lie her head on Leon like in the picture from August 27.

Here is another picture of Leon and Fiona following up on yesterday's picture of the day. Yesterday was in 2011, this is 2014. Take note that Fiona is holding hands with Leon. I mention that, because tomorrow I will put up another picture of these two in 2018, and you will see them holding hands the same way 4 years later. Too bad this picture is grainy, but it was taken in low light with a cheap camera and I didn't want to use the flash because it would wash out the colours and make their eyes look strange. Still, it captures the moment well enough.

Tuesday August 27, 2019 Pic of the Day.
A few days I ago I was telling someone how much Fiona missed Leon. Leon is the orange tabby, Fiona is the tiny cat. Fiona is not a kitten here, just a very small cat. When Leon passed away last year, Fiona lost someone she very much loved. She just adored Leon, and he felt the same way about her. I was looking through pictures from 2011 when I found this one. Fiona does not have another cat she really likes now - she never took to another cat other than Leon. I try to fill the gap, and though Fiona spends a lot of time on my lap, it is obvious to me she is not the same after Leon went away. I remember many years ago when a similar thing happened. I had two cats that were best friends - Felemur & Xxaque, and when Xxaque died, Felemur fell into a depression that never went away for the rest of his life.

Avensby loves her asperagus box even though she barely fits in now. She claimed this box as a kitten, and never relinquished it.

The second I saw this picture of Avensby, I immediately thought of the cherub on the bottom right of Raphael's painting "Madonna di San Sisto". I've included a detail of the cherub from that painting below.

I was talking about the look Dexter had in yesterday's picture with his "Airplane Ears". The other day Andi was looking lost, so I put her in the sunroom. She could go herself, but for some reason Andi and a couple of other cats sometimes need me to do it. Once they are there, they love it and stay for hours. Anyway, this time Andi was not happy and gave me the look you see here. This is a perfect example of "Airplane Ears". Norton is as happy as a clam, and his ears confirm that. Could have been a nice picture, but for some reason it turned out grainy. Still, it shows what I wanted it to.

Dexter watching something outside the sunroom. This picture shows a look all cats get that is very hard to describe. My nickname for it is, "Airplane Ears". Cats will do this when they hear something they are not sure of, when they see something they are not sure what to make of, or in times of slight annoyance. It is a common look to see in cats and can last only a second or two or much longer. I can't think of a perfect-fit similar look & emotion in humans, though the closest I can think of is "high alertness". It might be this look & emotion is unique to cats. Cats have very rich emotional flows - even the cats that are very stable mentally.

I've said it before, and it's true: Margarita is very hard to take pictures of. She does not like cameras, despite living with them all the time. This one is pretty good. It at the least captures her with a natural look on her face, though the colours and background in general is not very nice - especially when compared to yesterday's picture with the very nice colours. Margarita was focused on watching another cat on a counter when I took this picture. Small detail, but I like the way the bottom edge of the lampshade seems to fit in with the curve of her neck and doesn't overlap. That was not planned.

Avensby looking thoughtful on the sleigh on the side of the cat tree. I really love the colour combination and lighting in this picture. I've wanted to get a picture of Avensby on this spot for a while, but either the lighting wasn't right, or when it was, she wasn't there. You have to be patient with cats and lighting, and super patient when you want both to be a certain way at the same time. Because the windows in this room are on the east side of the house, and due to the trees and how light changes over time, there is a very slim bracket of time each morning that the light looks so rich on this spot. And, as anyone who knows cats will know, you can't just put a cat in a spot and make them look natural. It just has to happen, and I had to be ready with the camera. I've been trying for a picture of Avensby in this spot, in this light for about 2 years! For me, it was worth the wait.

I was taking pictures of Dexter who was sleeping on the cat cave when Margarita zipped by and scooted down through the hole to the next lower shelf. If I had not caught this moment, I wouldn't have noticed that Margarita was holding her tail in a square shape.

I like these cat tree pictures. I was holding the camera as high over my head as I could, and took a few pictures. Because the top of the baskets are about 6 feet, 4 inches high off the floor, I can't see what is going on in the baskets. It's only when I look at the picture do I see who is there and what they are doing. Front left: Andi, Front right: Fiona, Rear left: Dexter, Real right: Margarita.

Sunday August 18, 2019 Pic of the Day.
For yesterday's picture, I mentioned that I found pictures from 2010 that I'd never seen before - you can read the story below yesterday's picture. This picture is another one of those. The timing is good, because August 18, 2018, Leon pictured here passed away. I find it hard to believe a year has gone by, but it has. This picture is from March 14, 2010 and Leon would have been 18 months old. Leon was a very sweet cat that the other cats quite liked and got along with. I very much miss Leon and his sweet, silly, cheerful demeanour. Leon was 1 month away from being 10 years old when he passed. Before Leon and his siblings were born in September of 2008, I remember seeing his dad in my yard in Central Ontario for a couple of years. It was a very remote area, and my yard just happened to be part of an animal trackway that led from the farm next door to another farm one property away. The woods were thick and dangerous to cats in that area because there were animals up there that ate cats. They were called "Fishers" (Pekania pennanti). I know it was Leon's dad because it was the only orange tabby in the area, and he looked just like Leon. I remember watching him go through the yard and thinking what a nice looking cat he was. By this time, he was a pretty rough looking Tomcat, but he still was a nice, bright orange, and a big cat. Leon's mom was a barn cat that lived in the horse barn on the next property to the east, and I had seen her around for a couple of years as well. She would come onto my yard to hunt.

I got a wonderful surprise yesterday. Back in early 2010, my good digital camera (Canon PowerShot Digital ELPH S230) that I bought in January 2003 was starting to fail. Most pictures were just streaks of light and blotches of pink. By mid 2010, the camera was finished. Until yesterday, I didn't realize that I had never transfered the last batch of pictures from the memory card in the camera to the computer. For the last 9 years, those pictures were on the card, and I had never seen them. I purchased a new universal card reader yesterday, and I was testing it on my oldest huge CompactFlash (CF) memory card from this dead camera, and much to my shock, there were pictures I hadn't seen. There were 75 pictures, about 50 of which were full of streaks, but there were about 25 that were OK. Here is one of them of Leon (left), Andi (middle) and Daisy (right) in baskets in the loft I made in the log cabin. These 3 were about 15 months old here. By the way, if you look along the bottom edge of the picture, you can see faint horizontal digital streaks along the picture. That is the camera failing, but only slightly affecting this picture.

This picture was taken on one of the best days Cornelius had. He had spent the morning on the beach and docks at Aylen Lake by Algonquin Park. He loved the time there. He loved the water, the boats, the beach, everything about it. I think this was the best time of his life. After we went back to the rented cottage for lunch, Cornelius went onto this chair and passed out in the sun for the rest of the afternoon. It was early October, so the sun was just the perfect warmth, and it was a beautiful day that was neither cold nor hot with a clear blue sunny sky and the leaves on the trees were turning colour. The window he was in front of was open, so he could hear the sounds of the lake & boats.
August the 16th is the day Cornelius died in 2011. We had been together for 9 years and 1 day. August 16 is a sad day for me, but it is the day I remember all the cats I've had that have passed. I chose this picture because it brings back the memories for me of how happy he was at that time, and how he managed to always extract the best from life. I don't think I've met another cat you could take with you on vacation who would not be scared, and who wouldn't try to run away. I would never do that with any cat I've had before or since. It used to amaze me: in the morning after eating, I would open the door, and we would walk to the beach and docks - no leash needed, no need to carry him. He had never seen this place before, but he was fully in charge. We would spend time at the beach and docks, then we would walk back to the house, eat lunch and he would sleep. He even enjoyed the car rides. I had a pen mounted in the back seat on a box so he could see a 360 degree view. He just loved watching the world go by in the car. I had a saying for Cornelius and the way he handled life: "Cornelius - King of all that is". Just look at the picture from yesterday, and the look in his eyes.

HAPPY CORNELIUS DAY! Cornelius was found on August 15, 2002. He was near death when found on a lonely gravel road far from anything, and was a 4 year old Tomcat. I've said much on this site about Cornelius, but he is the most remarkable cat I've ever met, and he changed me as a person. I still miss him every day, but I'm so very happy I was the person who got to live with him for 9 years. There are many holidays in the year, but for me the most sacred is Cornelius Day. He looked like a cat, but that was only the tip of the iceburg of his being.

This is Daisy. Daisy is the most reclusive cat I've ever had. Funny thing is, her mom & siblings were/are not like that. She is however blessed with the most beautiful colours on her coat. This was taken with a very poor quality camera (Canon PowerShot ELPH 340 HS), but in real life, Daisy's colours are vibrant. Her white is super white, the black patches are pitch black that have a slight bluish sheen in the sun, the orange is deep and rich. Daisy will be 11 this September, and when this picture was taken she was about 2 months from being 7. If you look back at the Friday, August 9 picture, you can see one of her sisters Elly-May. If you go back to the Sunday, August 4 picture, you will see their brother Leon. That picture of Leon was taken with a very good camera that does an amazing job of getting the colours right (Sony a6000 camera). The vibrant orange you see that Leon is, is the exact same orange that Daisy has in her orange markings.

Avensby looks great to me in this picture. I also really like the bokeh in this picture. Bokeh basically refers to the background being blurred. In this case, the backlighting coming through the trees makes for sparkly beautiful colours the way it is rendered out of focus. I think it also helps the way the window frames in the sunroom are blurred giving the background a cathedral feel. Well, at least that's how it strikes me! Beautiful light, beautiful colours & and a beautiful cat. 3 out of 3.

Dexter looks like he's trying to sing here. Nice white teeth for an 11 year old cat. Dexter is the only cat I've ever met that LOVES having his teeth brushed. Most cats think of getting their teeth brushed as some form of torture, but Dexter comes running into the bathroom when he hears me geeting the cat toothbrush out. He jumps up on the bathroom counter and waits for me to start. Sometimes he comes back for a second brushing when I'm doing the other cat's teeth.

I remember taking this picture. Cornelius was lying on the rug right near the door where I was using this old boot scraper as a door stop. I quietly layed it down beside Cornelius and took the picture. I got the idea when I saw how Cornelius had his tail.

The close one is Fiona, the one behind is Elly-May. To look at these two, you'd think they have to be related, and I think they must be somehow, but... I got Elly-May in November of 2008 with her 4 siblings & mom. The mom was spayed within a month. Fiona was a found kitten of 6 months old in the spring of 2011. They were found in the same area, which was a remote country area 12km outside of a small town in a heavily forested zone - an area known to be one of the lowest densly poplulated areas of Central Ontario, Canada. Literally, thousands upon thousands of acres of swamps, forests & lakes. In this area, I'd noticed a few feral cats that look like this on the edge of remote woods as I was driving by, so it seems that whatever these cats are, they are either naturalized to the area, or it was just an amazing coincidence. In researching, it seems these cats are most likely "Norwegian Forest Cats" or something close. In the area where they were found, the locals just called them Forest Cats, and consider them fairly common. They have long hair and manes with orange and grey large spots on mainly white fur.

I often tell people that Avensby (in the middle) is a tiny cat. But the problem with pictures is you need a comparison to make size clear. When I saw these three together, I knew this was the chance to show this. Avensby is flanked by Norton to the left, and Dexter to the right. Both are good sized male cats. However, you can see why I say Avensby is tiny. You know it is not perspective, as Dexter is farther from the camera than Avensby, and you can see they are basically lined up. Funny thing is, when Avensby is standing, the comparison is not as easy to see because Avensby is very leggy. Her legs seem extra long for the size of her compared to most cats I've known. Avensby is over 3 years old here - she is not a kitten anymore, though she is about the size of a 5 month old kitten.

This is T-Bear. T-Bear just passed away on Thursday, August 1. Though originally a city cat from Toronto, she loved the great outdoors in the country and warm summer nights. She was a well loved cat who will be missed. When this picture was sent to me in January of 2018, it was titled: "T-Bear Caught A Mouse". Picture taken by: PJW.

This is Margarita's expression she got on her face when I was taking pictures of her. I had been taking many pictures with her tolerating me, then she got this look on her face. Margarita is very facially expressive, and this is a good one. My take on this expression is a combination of bored, resigned & annoyed. She is sitting on my lap here.
